Why a Playlist Length Calculator Is Useful
YouTube shows how many videos are in a playlist, but never the total running time. A 60-video course could be 12 hours or 45 hours. Without the real duration it is hard to decide whether the material fits your schedule or how many days you need at your preferred playback speed.
This free calculator solves that problem. Paste any public or unlisted playlist URL and it returns the exact total length together with conversions for 1.25×, 1.5×, 1.75×, 2× and custom speeds. A simple daily planner then shows how many days the content will take at the pace you can actually maintain.
How It Works
The tool uses the official YouTube Data API. It first collects every video ID in the playlist (handling pagination automatically), then requests the precise duration of each video. Durations arrive in ISO 8601 format and are converted to seconds, summed, and formatted into hours, minutes and seconds. The same total is divided by common speed multipliers so you can compare normal watching time with faster playback.
Private, deleted, upcoming or live videos usually return zero duration and are excluded, keeping the final number accurate for content you can watch right now.
Time Saved at Different Speeds
| Original | 1.25× | 1.5× | 1.75× | 2× |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour | 48 min | 40 min | 34 min | 30 min |
| 5 hours | 4 h | 3 h 20 m | 2 h 51 m | 2 h 30 m |
| 10 hours | 8 h | 6 h 40 m | 5 h 43 m | 5 h |
| 20 hours | 16 h | 13 h 20 m | 11 h 26 m | 10 h |
| 50 hours | 40 h | 33 h 20 m | 28 h 34 m | 25 h |
Common Use Cases
Online courses and study plans
Before starting a long free course, run the playlist through the calculator. You will know the true time commitment and can set realistic daily goals with the planner.
Exam preparation
When a professor shares lecture recordings, use the Remaining mode to see only the videos you have not watched yet and plan the days left before the exam.
Music and workout mixes
Match a playlist exactly to the length of a commute or gym session instead of guessing.
Content creators
Know the total length of your own tutorial series so you can set clear expectations for viewers.
Advanced Options Explained
- Full playlist – every video is included (default).
- Specific range – calculate only videos from number X to Y (useful for single modules).
- Remaining – enter how many videos you have already finished; the tool starts from the next one.
- Custom speed – any value between 0.25× and 16×.
- Daily planner – combine minutes-per-day with a chosen speed to get an estimated finish date.
Getting Accurate Results
Always use a playlist URL that contains the list= parameter. Private playlists cannot be read by the API — set them to Public or Unlisted. Create a free YouTube Data API key once in Google Cloud Console; the browser remembers it for future visits. Very large playlists may take a little longer because of pagination and API quotas.
Your API key stays only in your browser’s local storage and is never sent to any server except Google’s official YouTube API.
Start Calculating
Paste a playlist URL above, add your free API key in Advanced options, and click Calculate Duration. In a few seconds you will know exactly how long the content is and how quickly you can finish it at the speed that works best for you.
